For those who followed our blog last year, we are thrilled to tell you that Jim has fully recovered from his kidney surgery. So...here we are heading South for the sunshine again.
Mon - Dec 27, 2010
We left home around 11 a.m. and made it to our usual first stop at the Seven Feathers RV Resort in Canyonville, OR. Rain, rain, rain. We had a weather window on Tuesday for getting over the Siskiyous. However, Joyce had a fainting spell and ended up spending the night at Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg. We didn't get the OK from doctors to continue our trip until late afternoon on Tuesday - too late to head out. It snowed Tuesday night and Wednesday so we had to wait until Thursday for the next weather window. Let me say right here, we could have driven on Wednesday if we wanted to chain up both the truck and the trailer. Not doing that!
Thurs - Dec 30
We drove over the Siskiyous and arrived at Red Bluff, CA to sunshine and 51 degrees! Yes!! No rain or wind. Lots of snow beside the road in many places but the pavement was bare.
Pictures taken while driving down the road.
We always stay at the Durango RV Resort in Red Bluff. We need to come here sometime in the Spring or Fall as it is a beautiful park, right on the Sacramento River. Sites are long and wide with lots of grass and trees and fountains. It's a fairly new park and will be even nicer when the trees get a little bigger. The staff is super friendly and helpful. They aren't a Good Sam park but they're a 10/10/10 in our book.
Fri - Dec 31
Made it to the Kit Fox RV Park in Patterson, CA. Jim drove the whole way as Joyce is feeling puny because of a bad cold. Blue skies and sunshine all the way. Celebrated with KFC chicken for dinner and were in bed by 10 p.m. Happy New Year!
Sat - Jan 1, 2011
Made it to the Bakersfield Orange Grove RV Park today. Was cold, rainy and ESE wind blowing when we left Patterson. Burned up a whole tank of fuel to go 100 miles - that's about 6 mpg!!! Fortunately the wind died after the first 100 miles so we didn't have to fill up at the Avenal truck stop at $3.75 a gallon. Although we did pay $3.61 here in Bakersfield. Wow! We don't get it. You can see them pumping oil right out of the ground less than 1/2 mile away.
It was mid-50's when we arrived here in Bakerfield and only showers off and on. Picked some oranges. They are smaller than usual but still juicy.
We are hoping to make it over the pass at Tehachapi tomorrow and into Hemet. Will check the weather channel soon.
Sun - Jan 2
Winds blowing strong all night and this morning ESE at about 15 - 20 mph. We debated for a long time but decided to stay one more night here in Bakersfield as winds are supposed to die down although there is a chance of rain/snow showers in the mountains. The wind gusts were so strong they blew a metal-framed patio chair across the concrete patio. Oranges rolling around on the ground in the park. An 8-ft high pile of tumbleweeds closed a highway nearby. Since we didn't have much else to do, we went to a local urgent care for Joyce's cold. She has bronchitis and borderline pneumonia. They gave her a nebulizer treatment, shot of antibiotics and RX for amoxicillin. Winds starting to die down when we got back to the park.
Mon - Jan 3
Woke up to blue sky & sunshine, no wind. But it snowed in the mountains. Both Hwy 58E and I-5 South were closed due to snow. Thought we might have to spend another night in Bakersfield. Finally, about 11 a.m. they opened 58 so we packed up and headed out. Bare pavement all the way. Some roadside snow at Tehachapi and quite a bit at Cajon Pass on I-15. We were going to take 215 to 74 but there was a big traffic backup at the junction with 210 so, following our new Garmin, we took 210 to the 10 and then Hwy 79. Traffic moved right along we made it here in record time - 3 hrs 40 mins. YEA!! We are in site 613. Di & Tim are next door in 614. Temps here in the low 50's.
