Welcome to Jim and Joyce's travel blog. This blog is for our family and friends who want to follow along as we live our dream of traveling around the country in our Cougar fifth-wheel. Hope you enjoy reading about this as much as we are enjoying living it.

Heading for the sun

Wed - Jan 11

We got a late start heading south this winter because Jim had surgery December 6th and Joyce was dealing with positional vertigo.  We both made a quick recovery and we left home Jan 5th.  Had great weather, no rain, no snow and the only wind was a little tail wind from Red Bluff to Patterson.  Whenever we pass by 20 Mule Team Road near Boron, out in the Mojave Desert, we remember the old TV show "Death Valley Days" which was sponsored by 20 Mule team Borax laundry soap.  Borax was mined in the desert and hauled out by 20 mule teams to the closest train depot.  According to the internet, you can still buy the soap from the Dial Corporation.

We spent an extra day in Needles, CA, at the Elks RV Park - full hookups for $15 a night.  Well, all except TV but we bring our own satellite TV.  They actually have a nice view of the mountains in the distance.

While in Needles, we drove up to Laughlin NV to check out a few casinos.  Saw the antique car collection at the Rivers Edge Casino. There was no 1930 Model A or 1956 Chev like we used to own but they had some pretty nice cars. We made just enough money at slots to buy lunch and ice cream. On the way back we fueled up in Bullhead City. Diesel prices are all over the map. $3.75 is pretty good when everyone else wants over $4. In a 25-mile stretch we hit 3 states – California, Arizona and Nevada and had to change our watches twice (one hour ahead, then back).

We took 95 South on the California side from Needles to I-10. One stretch of 95 has signs that say “Dips”. Joyce calls it the roller coaster road. The dips are so large and deep that whole vehicles disappear in them. We ran into construction and came to a complete stop for 15 minutes. By the time we started up again we had a convoy which drove on the only open lane at 10 mph for another 15 minutes.

We arrived at Canyon Vistas RV Park in Gold Canyon about 3:15.  We are in site 76.  Have never stayed here before but it looks very nice.  The sites are very large, 35’ x 50'.   We will be here for at least a month.

A special note:
The house on the other side of the wall behind our rig is actually in Gold  Canyon RV and Golf Resort, where we spent 2 weeks last year.  Jim estimates that it is a ¾ wedge shot (78 yards) to the second green from our site but you can’t get there from here without leaving the park.
Some of the RV parks here, including the one we are in, do not take credit cards. Since we had left our checkbook at home, we had asked our daughter, Kathy, to overnight mail it to us so that it would be here when we arrived. When we checked in they told us that, yes, indeed our mail had arrived but it was delivered to the other Jim West in the park. We finally met up with him later in the evening, got our checkbook and had a good laugh about it. He and his wife, Linda, are from Ohio.
We have met quite a few people here in the park. Everyone is very friendly. Will be checking out all the facilities in the next few days and reporting back.
